June 5, 2014 Thursday Dismal Swamp Visitor Center Free dock

0715, Left the tie up and proceeded down the canal, North in an attempt to time the lock and bridge opening at 1100hrs.  Got close, Lock master had a south bound sailboat he was locking thru so waited till they passed and we went thru the bridge opening and waiting for the lockmaster to get to the lock and open that for us.1130Got into the lock, finally.  Lockmaster regaled stories of the historic Dismal Swamp and asked if we had any conch shells.  Hesitantly we told him no, we hadn't been to the Bahamas, asking why and noticing all of them around his office, he told us he was always looking for a better and bigger one??  Then taught me how to blow in one and make different tones by putting my hand slowing in and out of the opening.  Very cool.  Boater behind becoming impatient he let us out of the lock, telling us this brown water(looks like expresso) was probably the most purified water we would find.  Hmmm?
1530 Passing Norfolk Naval Yard and into the Hampton Roads "Battle of Ironclads" in 1862 we saw two tall ships with full sails up coming in for the Harborfest tomorrow.
1700-Arrived at Sunset Marina just before they all left for the day, tied up and hooked to electricity, we charged everything up, phones, computers etc. Walked over to the restaurant for hamburgers and grocery store for provisions that we could easily carry 3 blocks.  Came back to the boat, tried to catch up on computer, blog but just too tired.  Quiet marina, cooled off so didn't have to use the air cond.
