January 10, 2014, Friday evening

Went to the Kauai Coffee Plantation for the tour, coffee tasting and coffee to take home.

They talked about how they separate the ripe berries that are gree from the red berries from the black berries and the Pea Berry(the berry that is whole not two halves in a pod.

And of course I had to stop and take pictures of the White Hisbiscus, not sure what the flower below is.

We were told this is a plumera tree, we've seen alot with 2 or three flowers and no leaves, they say they still bloom at different stages when the tree is bear or full of leaves.
This flower smelled like a gardenia which is a cousin of the coffee trees

Wow, coffee bean as big as these dried up coconuts, now thats a good harvest., or a good tale by the elder Hawaiians
these are how the coffee beans grow, they turn colors at different times

Cute little eatery in one of the towns we drove thru

Made it to the Grand Canyon of the Pacific.  lots of rainbows and moisture, a little hazy today

Can you find the waterfall?

Windy also, think a storm is blowing in

It's amazing how the scenery changes as the sun sets and the clouds move
Full rainbows, double rainbows, beautiful, very magical

Flower on the edge of one of the lookouts, Vera thought she recognized from the mainland

Muddy trail up and around the canyon
Started drizzling while we did a short hike, Vera kept dry under the tree.
By the time we got to the top of the mountain it was really raining, even the chickens new to get out of the rain, but as soon as we stopped they came running for food.  We didn't have anything to give them.
Had to run up the path to the top just to read the sign which we could barely see, obviously behind Curt below was all fog. We made itto the top of Mt.Waialeale

Bet they are really hungry way up here by themselves.

Coming down a different road, narrow and older, the Pacific Ocean out on the horizon

With a rainbow over the mountain behind us.

Little ranch at the bottom of this cannon by the mountain stream

Small town at the base of this mountain.
Stopped at a Russian Fort in the green above along the water, now only the walls standing with nice sunset

Across the river was the sight Captain Cook's discovery landing in 1778
 Nice sunset.
Stopped at Hanapepe on the way home.  They were having an Art and Music Festival with all the little shops open and vendors selling their artwork, jewlry.  Neat things.  Nice music of all kinds, concert fiddlests with just plain Guitar players.  Curt and Vera excited about this used book store.  Vera got to visit with an author who was doing a book signing.
Saw more Hawaiian pillow covers at an antique shop

Preprint red fabric on white background
Nice artwork from a local in the window of her shop

  1. The canyon pictures look a lot like Painted Canyon in Medora (except for the waterfall). They just need to import a herd of bison and some mule deer....

  2. Ha Ha, these canyons are alot bigger though.

  3. You will get to see some more wild, roaming chickens when you get to Key West.....
